Cascade Building

Cascade Building

Client: Pierce College - Fort Steilacoom
Size: approx. 200,000 sf
Location: Lakewood, WA

This is a three phase project intended to renovate almost 200,000sf of the 254,000sf 1960’s era concrete structure. The program includes remodel and expansion of the student services department, a new black box theater, remodel and expansion of the library and media center, relocation of the bookstore and remodel of the faculty and administration areas.

Clarifying entry, circulation and wayfinding through this expansive facility was a key conceptual goal. Reconfiguration of the north and southwest building entrances play a significant role in improving the identification of the primary building entry points. Core reorganization, along with new wayfinding elements and architectural features, will strengthen vertical connection within the five story building; improving both visual and physical accessibility to primary student services and other resources. The library will be renovated to address the changing needs of students with robust use of technology and flexible spaces that accommodate formal and informal teaching/learning settings. The Cascade Building Renovation is a complex synthesis of disparate conditions and influences with clear organization and fresh identity.
