FAQ

1. Our Firm

What types of projects does McGranahanPBK specialize in?

McGranahanPBK focuses on educational, civic, and community‑centered architecture. Our portfolio includes PreK‑12 schools, higher‑education facilities, athletic complexes, performing arts centers, and public buildings. We combine research‑driven design with over five decades of experience in learning environments.

What is your design philosophy?

Our work is grounded in the belief that architecture should elevate the human experience and better society. We emphasize collaboration, sustainability, and evidence‑based design. Every project begins with listening to the people who will use the space — students, educators, staff, and community members — to ensure the final design reflects their needs and values.

2. Our Process

How does your architectural design process work?

While each project is unique, our process typically includes:

  • Discovery and Visioning – understanding goals, culture, and community priorities
  • Concept Development – exploring spatial strategies and design directions
  • Design Refinement – detailed planning, modeling, and stakeholder engagement
  • Documentation and Permitting – preparing construction documents
  • Construction Administration – supporting the project through completion

This structured approach ensures clarity, alignment, efficiency, and high‑quality outcomes.

How do you collaborate with school districts and community stakeholders?

We use accessible workshops, surveys, student engagement sessions, and public forums to gather meaningful input. This ensures the design reflects the values and priorities of the entire community.

3. Resilient and High‑Performance Design

Do you incorporate resilient or energy‑efficient design strategies?

Yes. Resilience and sustainability are integrated from the earliest planning stages. We focus on creating buildings that perform reliably over decades, adapt to evolving educational needs, and withstand both daily use and major weather events. Our strategies include daylighting, energy modeling, durable low‑carbon materials, and high‑performance building systems that support long‑term efficiency and occupant comfort. Many of our projects also pursue sustainability certifications such as LEED or CHPS. We design with a 50‑year horizon in mind, ensuring each building is not only visually compelling but built to last, maintainable over time, and capable of modular updates as technology and program needs change.

4. Project Logistics

How do you help clients manage project budgets?

We use cost modeling, value analysis, and ongoing budget tracking to ensure financial alignment at every stage. Early collaboration with cost estimators and contractors helps minimize surprises and maximize value.

Do you work with general contractors or provide design‑build services?

Yes. We regularly collaborate with general contractors, construction managers, and design‑build teams. Our experience with GC/CM, design‑bid‑build, and design‑build delivery methods helps clients choose the best approach for their project.

5. Service Area

Do you work outside Washington?

McGranahanPBK serves clients throughout the Pacific Northwest and partners with PBK to support projects across the country. If you’re unsure whether your project falls within our service area, we’re happy to discuss it.
