Matthew Bissen, AIA

Director of Design, Director of Research

As Director of Design and Research, I work with the firm’s partners to run the design studio. We strive to develop teams and a design culture focused on design excellence and collaboration to achieve the highest quality design and learning spaces possible. Coupled to this we are working to engage research practices to shape how we approach design and to create a culture of learning at the core of our practice. I also serve as the Lead Designer on many of our most complex and compelling projects. It is through this work that my creative energy and passion flourish. With every project I look forward to sharing my energy and passion with students, client groups, the community, and all of my team members.

Beyond this work, teaching and research affect me in profound ways. Being a Part Time Faculty member at the University of Washington Architecture Department brings me into contact with a collection of creative minds which continue to challenge my thinking and how I approach design. My research and writing in collaboration with scholars around the world gives me a chance to dig deep into social questions around space and education.
